COLLECTIONS

Archeological Collection

It was estabilished trough donations, recognitions and excavations and contains exhibits dating from the younger Stone-Age to thr Middle Ages. The exhibits certify that people have continuosly lived in thi area since 5000 BC. Particularily remarkable for European history is the antique collection with its unique early Christian items. Paricular national importance belongs to the exhibits from the Middle-Age necropolis of Đakovo.

The Patriotic War Collection

Thjs is the youngest collection in the museum. Its estabilisment appeared to be more than neccessary as we had been collecting as many documents as possible during the war to explain the charachter of its operations. A part of this collection was estabilished after the war thanks to the complaisance of numerous war participants who were directly envolved into war operations while defending this area. This collection has a local character and contains weapons, video tapes uniforms, photographs, military rank labels, plans for defending the barracks, layouts of plans for conquering YPA- barracks, leaflets and other documents.

Ethnographic

The majority of this collection is comprised of textile items , different national costumes – among which we should sort out the rich and famous costumes with golden-flax embroideries. Apart from the above mentioned items the most valuable part of this colection encompass towels , bed covers, different types of weaving devices, items from a typical farm house, wooden chests, pottery, courgettes in different colours etc.

Photographs and postcards

This collection contains thousands of various photographs. There are documentary photographes and portraits which show a very rich cultural, religious, sports economic and political life of this area during the previous century, showing the most important participants in the most relevant events of that time. It is particxularily significant that photographers from Đakovo made an effort to record those events. Postcards are classified according to two criteria: 1) Time of their appearance and 2) their contents and motifs. The most numerous collection contains old postcards of Đakovo dating from the end of the 19th century up to 1941.

Historical and Cultural Collection

It was estabilished immediately after the museum´s foundation along with all other collections in this institution. For the past 50 years its exhibits have been collected through donations, repurchasing, and transfers from similar institutions. It contains various written and material documents about the development of the town and the surrounding area from the 13th up to the 20th century. Unfortunately , the exhibits form the Middle Ages and the Osmanii period are rare, whereas documents from the then following centuries are abundant. Certainly, the most important part of this collection dates from the second half of the 19th and the 20 century when Đakovo definetely developes as a commercial and trade centre still closely connected to its rural neighbourhood. The collection contains weapons, documents and various items belonging to sport and art clubs, stylized ornaments and jewelry, bills, certificates, flags ,guild drawers, seals/stamps , etc.

Numismatic

The most important parts of this collection are antique coins ,which were used in the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD (from Octavius to Honorius), and the silver coins (denar) dating from the peroid of queen Mary and king Sigismund, 14th and 15th century AD .
